What Is The Australian DAMA Immigration Program?

August 11, 2019

DAMA or “Designated Area Migration Agreement” is a formal agreement between Australian Government and regional, state or territory authority.
Endorsed employers in regional areas can utilise this program to lodge labour agreements to sponsor skilled and semi-skilled overseas workers in the areas of labour shortages.
Upon approval of the labour agreement, an overseas worker can then be hired by an employer.
This program also offers pathway to permanent residency for visa applicants through employer sponsorship.

What occupations does it cover?

DAMA covers more types occupations as compared to the standard 482 Work Visa program. The number and types of occupations available for this program varies on the individual DAMA that has been negotiated between Australian government and the regional areas.

What are the requirements?

Skills Assessment

Skills Assessment is a verification of applicant’s skills, qualifications, and employment background. This requirement is based on similar terms and conditions that are applied for regular Work Visa and Employer Nominated Sponsorship programs.
The immigration may require a person to demonstrate that he or she has the skills necessary to perform the tasks of nominated occupation by undertaking a Skills Assessment conducted by relevant Skills Assessing Authority.

English proficiency

The English proficiency requirements are significantly lower as compared to 482 work visa program.
For instance, the South Australian DAMA program requires an overall score of 4.5 in IELTS for a work visa application while, the Northern Territory DAMA program requires an overall score of 5 in IELTS for an employer sponsored permanent residence visa application.

Age requirements

At the time of nomination application for permanent residency, an applicant should be below 50 years of age. This gain is a generous concession as compared to the regular employer sponsored permanent residency pathway where the applicant should be below 45 years of age at the time of lodgement of the application.

Salary Requirements

Employers are required to provide salaries which align more closely to award rates especially for trade occupations. A 10% concession applies to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold which stipulates a minimum salary of AUD 48,510 per year.

Employer Sponsorship

Applicants cannot individually apply on their own and need a sponsorship by an employer who has received approval for DAMA labour agreement.

Which areas of Australia have the DAMA program in place?

There are currently 7 DAMAs in place:
– Northern Territory
– The Gold Fields, Western Australia
– Great South Coast, Victoria
– Adelaide City and Regional South Australia
– Orana, New South Wales
– Cairns, Far North Queensland

What you should do?

To secure your chance of migrating to Australia by using the DAMA program it is important to start preparing your application from now itself.
First and foremost, if your occupation is in demand and if you meet the requirements, then it is important to complete a Skills Assessment application as soon as possible.
Applicants who undertake Skills Assessment application concurrently with an English Language proficiency test, stand a better chance of lodging their application rather than those who prioritise one over the other.
