Tasmanian State Migration Program 2021

January 30, 2021

The Tasmanian State Migration Program for 2021 has just been opened on 29 Jan 2021.

This is positive news for applicants who are both onshore in Australia and offshore and have been eagerly waiting to lodge their applications for a long time due to delays which have been primarily caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

Tasmania is renowned for its health care, education & training and hospitality industry which are major sources of employment for people living in this state.

There are limited number of places available for Tasmanian State Migration Program for 2021 and applicants are advised to lodge their applications as soon as possible.

Let’s have a closer look at the Tasmanian Skilled Migration Program.

Occupation List

Applicants who qualify for direct State Sponsored Permanent Residence Visa (190) i.e. Skilled Nominated Visa and State Sponsored Regional Work Visa (491) i.e. Skilled Work Regional Provisional Visa may only apply if their occupation is listed on the Tasmanian Skilled Occupation List Jan 2021

Requirements For Visa Applicants

The requirements to apply for State Sponsored Permanent Residence Visa 190 and State Sponsored Regional Work Visa 491 are quite complex and we have briefly highlighted the main application criteria below:

Overseas Skilled Applicants (Outside Australia)

Applicants who are not currently onshore in Australia are eligible to apply for the State Sponsored Regional Work Visa program (491) and can lodge an application upon invitation from Migration Tasmania.

Tasmanian State Nomination Program 2021 - Hospitality Industry

Applicants do not necessarily need a job offer to lodge an application, however, should they have one at hand then the offer must be at an equivalent level to what an Australian citizen would be offered.

Applicants Working In Tasmania

Applicants who are currently residing in Tasmania, must have been doing so for at least the last 6 months. Although they must meet the experience requirements in their nominated field of work however, 491 visa applicants are not required to be currently working in their nominated occupation.

Onshore applicants are also eligible to apply for State Sponsored Permanent Residence Visa (190).

International Students

International Students

Applicants who are international students and have graduated from Tasmanian institutes while residing in Tasmania will be able to lodge an application for either State Sponsored Permanent Residence visa 190 or State Sponsored Regional Work Visa 491 under two different cohorts.

Primarily the categories are focused on graduates who commenced their studies prior to 30th June 2021 and those who will commence after 30th June 2021. The requirements for lodging a state nomination vary between these two cohorts.

Small Business Owners

Under the Tasmanian skilled migration program, small business owners residing in Tasmania for the last 6 months and who have been operating a business and generating an income of at least $53,900 per year can apply for State Sponsored Regional Work Visa 491.

What You Should Do?

Australian migration program is quite complex and changes frequently and the Tasmanian migration certainly signifies this.

In our experience majority of potential applicants tend to make the mistake of waiting to start the entire process in the hope that State Occupation Lists will have their occupation listed once the relevant state starts accepting applications.

The right approach would be to start the process of Skills Assessment as soon as possible, as it forms the main basis of lodging a future application.

Skills Assessment

This initial step is the most important one because if an applicant doesn’t pass the Skills Assessment then, they are ineligible to proceed any further, let alone applying for a visa in future.

We also recommend that applicants undertake an English language test at the same time as they are doing the Skills Assessment to minimise the time it takes to reach up to the stage when they can lodge their visa application.
English Test

For those applicants who have completed Skills Assessment and meet the English language requirements, we recommend that they proceed with the lodgement of Expression of Interest as it is also an important step in the migration process.
