Your Australian Visa Options – Beyond Covid 19

June 1, 2020

As the world is slowly getting to grips with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and many countries across the globe are starting to ease restriction, it might now be a good time to start working on building a safety net for your future by moving ahead with your Australian Immigration plans.

In this current climate we advise applicants to choose visa options that offer long term stability rather than short-term gains.

Given the downtime in business due to Covid-19 pandemic, many employers in Australia are currently reluctant to invest in sponsoring foreign nationals on work visas as they are getting government subsidies to hire and retain Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents.

Therefore, it is ideal that applicants opt to migrate through State sponsored visas rather than Employer sponsored work visas especially during this time.

Visas which do not require employer sponsorship to migrate to Australia include 189, 190 and 491 Visas.

The 189 visa offers direct permanent residency however, procuring this visa is now becoming extremely difficult because an invitation for it is based on highly competitive expression of interest invitation rounds. Also, an applicant’s occupation must only be listed on MLTSSL list.

The 190 (State Sponsored Skilled Nominate Visa – Permanent) and 491 (Skilled Work Regional – State Sponsored – Provisional) both require a State Sponsorship however, these visa types offer a greater chance of being granted upon lodgement of successful application.

We have discussed below some benefits of utilising the 190 and 491 State Sponsored visa programs:

Avoiding the competitive EOI invitation rounds

Applicants still have to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) however, with these visa types (190 and 491) they avoid EOI invitation system which otherwise is subject to supply and demand and favors those applicants that have higher number of points, who get invited first.

With 190 and 491 State sponsored visa programs, applicants only need to get 65 points to move forward with an application.

Availability Of More Occupations

Number of occupations available for both the 190 and 491 visa programs is more than those available for 189 Visa.

An applicant has access to both the MLTSSL and STSOL list should they wish to apply for a 190 Visa.
With a 491 Visa an applicant has access to MLTSSL, STSOL and RSOL list  and the relevant State lists.

When opting to move forward with a 190 or 491 Visa, an applicant must also bear in mind that every state has its own rules and requirements.

Every year the month of July marks the start of a new financial year and Australian States typically start accepting invitations from the month of July every year and continue to do so through till June in the following year.

State nomination requirements are more straightforward at the start of the new financial year and become more complex and restrictive as the number of applications received starts getting close to the occupation ceiling that are set for individual states.

For the program year 2019-2020 the number of places available for the 491 visa across various states is 12,388, while the number of places available for the 190 visa across various states is 12800.

How Can We Assist You ?

Given the economic stability of Australia as a nation and how well the country has handled the COVID-19 pandemic on its shores, Australia continues to be regarded as a desirable place to live.

Most lockdown restrictions have now been lifted in various Australian states and starting from 1st July 2020, flights will resume to some of the neighbouring countries.

We advise candidates to keep an eye on the 190 and 491 Visa programs as they provide an easy pathway to migrate to Australia.

Before you consider moving forward with a visa application, we recommend undertaking a Skills Assessment as it is a mandatory step where authorities verify whether your experience and qualifications.

We have assisted many candidates to successfully migrate to Australia on both 491 and 190 visa program and will be able to assist you through all the stages of lodging a successful visa application including the Skills Assessment.
