When will the changes apply?
The changes will be applicable from 15th November 2020. Applicants will now be required to correctly
answer 20 multiple choice questions and must get a score of 75 % overall to pass the test.
Within the set of these multiple questions there will be 5 questions on Australian Values which they must answer correctly, in other words applicants must achieve a score of 100% on all questions related to Australian values otherwise, they would be required to retake the test when it gets scheduled for them.

Some questions that may be based on Australian values would include but would not be limited to the following:
– Should people tolerate one another where they find that they disagree?
– In Australia, can you encourage violence against a person or group of people if you have been insulted?
– Should people in Australia make an effort to learn English
– Which statements best demonstrate Australian values about freedom of expression?
– Which of the following is an example of contributing to the Australian community?
Will you be able to pass the test?

The citizenship test questions may seem quite logical to answer however, it is important that one honestly believes in the Australian values and should prepare for the test before attempting it.
Eligible citizenship applicants are encouraged to read Australian Citizenship Our Common Bond which is a helpful resource to prepare for the Australian Citizenship Test.

Common Reasons For Refusal Of Citizenship Application
We have listed below some of the most common reasons for refusal of Citizenship application:

At the time of Citizenship test applicants are also required to undertake an interview.
The purpose of the interview is generally to establish ones identity and the assessor is also authorized to check an applicant’s basic knowledge of English and whether the applicant understands the meaning of becoming an Australian citizen and the responsibilities and privileges that are bestowed upon becoming an Australian citizen.
Applicants at times do not give appropriate answers to the questions asked by the assessor and this results them in failing the citizenship test.
Applicants are allowed to attempt the citizenship test only once they pass the Citizenship interview.

This may come as a surprise, but a lot of people do not prepare well for the test.
Considering that only 20 questions are asked and if one gets 5 questions wrong then they do not pass the test.
For the year 2019-2020 a total of 22,869 failed the citizenship test.

The Australian authorities verify the identity documents of applicants and run a check against the identity documents that the applicant may have used at an earlier stage when applying for Australian visas.
Discrepancies can be flagged and if any fraudulent identity documentation is detected then it could result in refusal of not only refusal of citizenship application but also possible cancellation of permanent residency.

All applicants must satisfy Australian immigration and government that they are individuals of good character.
Applicants may be asked to provide police clearances from their previous countries of residence even if these were provided at the time of permanent residence visa application.
It is also important that applicants disclose all their offences (even minor traffic offences), fines, suspended sentence or any periods of imprisonment.
Should an applicant not disclose any relevant character concerns during the time of lodging the application then it can be viewed as being dishonest and can lead
to refusal of Citizenship application.

Many applicants do not closely review their travel history and end up lodging applications that do not meet the requirements.
Applicants must have held a valid Australian visa for at least 4 years and out of these 4 years one must have resided in Australia for at least 12 months as an Australian Permanent Resident.
If you have been a resident in Australia for at least past 4 years with at least one year out of these years
as an Australian Permanent Residents, then you may be eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship.
Citizenship application processing timeframes are currently between 15 – 28 months.
Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure that one meets the Citizenship eligibility criteria at the time of application, as one can wait for such an extended period of time and might get their application rejected simply because one doesn’t meet the eligibility requirement.
