Australia Reveals Migration Budget 2020-2021

October 7, 2020

The much-awaited Australian budget was revealed recently and it clarifies the government’s position in terms of migration intake for 2020-2021.

The planning for Australian migration intake is driven by factors that will help in its economic recovery, which unlike in the previous years was more so focused on driving and sustaining the economy.

We have mentioned some key takeaways that will eventually impact your Australian migration application.

Australian Migration Ceiling

Planned ceiling for Migration Program will remain the same at 160,000 places as it was for year 2019-2020.
Skilled Migration Stream will be allocated approximately 67% places off the new permanent residents coming to Australia and the balance 33% will be allocated to family stream visa applicants (partner and parents).

Regional Allocations

Regional Visas will remain popular option for people to migrate to Australia amongst the various visa types under Skilled Migration Stream.

In the overall financial year budget, there is a high emphasis on concessions being granted to regional economies and applications associated to regional areas.

Visa applicants and partner visa applicants especially those residing in regional areas will be prioritised for 2020-2021 Migration Program.

Global Talent and Business Migrants

High emphasis is also being given to applicants for Global Talent Independent Visa program with 15,000 places reserved for this visa category.
Business Innovation and Investment Visa Program applicants will also be allocated 13,500 places.

Family Visas

Family stream (partner visa and parent visas) will be allocated 77,300 places.
The government will also introduce English language requirements for Partner visa applicants and their permanent resident sponsors.

These changes (which will be announced at a later stage) are meant to support English language acquisition and enhance social and economic participation of migrants in the Australian society.

Conclusion

In general the Australian net overseas migration is expected to fall by end of 2020-21 and will gradually increase to a whopping 201,000 by 2023-24.

It is expected that international students and permanent migrants will return in 2021 as travel begins to resume. The Northern Territory is set to become the first Australian jurisdiction to welcome back international students by the beginning of November 2020.

The Government has also announced that it will offer Visa application charge (VAC) refunds, waivers or visa extensions to those people who had visa granted to them but were unable to travel to Australia due to
Covid-19.
