Migrants both temporary and permanent as acknowledged by the Australian government will continue to play an important role in running Australia’s vibrant economy.
There is also no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the Australian migration program, however with Australia’s positive actions in containing the pandemic, the country is now gearing up to open its international borders.
We discuss below some of the key changes announced so far:
Australian immigration will remain capped at 160,000 visa places for this financial year, this number is the same as last year (2019-2020).

The migration budget has also been already handed down to all Australian states and they are in the process of publishing their individual allocations, which is anticipated to happen by November.
Some states such as South Australia have already announced that it shall announce its allocations for migration intake by late November 2020.
The following breakdown gives a snapshot of visa allocations for this financial year :
– 28,900 places reserved for Permanent Visas (189 & 190) and Regional Work Visas (491)
– 13,500 places reserved for Skilled Business Migrants visas
– 22,000 places reserved for Employer Sponsored Permanent visas (186)
– 15,200 places reserved for Global talent and Distinguished Talent Visas
– 77,300 places reserved for Family stream visas (Partner and Parent Visas)
Commercial international flights have recently started with the first flight from New Zealand carrying passengers landing in Sydney on 16/10/2020.

Australia is also currently negotiating resumption of international flights with various Asian countries such as Singapore, South Korea, Japan and some Pacific nations.
These are some of the nations that have successfully managed the containment of COVID 19 pandemic, and it is anticipated that by as early as December international flights with these nations shall start taking place.
Changes to Partner Visas
Australian immigration has also announced that from July 2021 Permanent Partner Visa applicants and sponsors of Partner Visas will also have to undertake an English test to prove at least functional level of English.

Priority processing will also be given to partner visa applicants who reside in Australian Regional areas.
Applicants will receive access to government funded English language program (500 hours of free English language classes) , and only after attaining functional level of English can their visas be granted.
The purpose of this change is to incentivise and help the migrants in developing English language skills which will assist them in assimilating in the Australian society.
This change is not yet finalised as it will up for vote in the parliament and only after the relevant legislation is passed then, it will be enacted which is anticipated to happen in July 2021.
What you should do ?
It is important to understand that due to Covid-19 pandemic employment of a lot applicants has been impacted around the globe.

Australia with its strong economy remains an ideal destination both for employment and migration as such, there will be intense competition amongst migrants this time around to snatch a chance to migrate to Australia.
The starting point for Australian migration program is to first ensure that one attains a Positive Skills Assessment Outcome. Without getting a positive outcome, one cannot proceed further with the Australian migration
process.
We therefore, recommend all interested applicants to start with this step first.
Depending on the visa an applicant is interested in, an English test may or may not be required.
Should the applicant have already achieved a positive skills assessment and meet the necessary English language
requirements then, one should proceed with preparation and lodgement of Expression of Interest which shows to the Australian Immigration that an applicant is interested in migrating to Australia.
Cost cutting and DIY approach can indeed save money for an applicant however, it is important to understand that Australian migration legislation changes regularly and small areas of information if overlooked by an applicant can prove to be detrimental to an application.
